What is wellness? And why is it important?

Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on the basis to train better physical and mental health outcomes . To understand the significance of wellness ,it’s important to understand how it is linked to health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) ,health is defined as being “a state of complete physical ,mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

People often think about wellness in terms of physical health - nutrition ,exercise, weight, management ,etc. Wellness is commonly viewed as having seven dimensions: Mental , Physical , Social, Financial ,Spiritual, Environmental

Mental Wellness

Mental wellness includes all aspects of mental health, emotional state and well-being. In turn ,your mental wellness influences how you think , feel and behave in your daily life .

This may include anxiety , emotions , stress management ,self care , supporting others with lived experience .

        Strategies to enhance your mental wellness

        1 -Take care of your mental health by focusing your awareness on the present moment.

        2 -Exercise regularly ,eat healthy and get enough sleep.

        3 -Use relaxation and self care that work for you.

        4 -Choose a good environment and practice mindfulness.

        5 -Express feelings and emotions effectively. Seek support from family ,friends and community.

Physical Wellness

Physical wellness includes a variety of health behaviors like exercise ,proper nutrition , good sleep and sexual health. Physical  wellness involves learning about disease and prevention of that disease .It also develops healthy habits that will enable you to live a long and happier life. 

 This may include healthy habits , active living, nutrition ,good sleep.

        Strategies to enhance your physical wellness

        1 -  Make a habit of regular exercise and aim for at least 30 min of meditation Daily.

        2 - Eat more vegetables ,fresh fruits per day and get 3-4 liters of water per day .

        3 - Educate yourself ,it helps to improve your self confidence.

        4 - Practice waking up early or at the same time each day to promote good sleep and mental focusing.

        5- Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

Social wellness

  It includes how we interact with society or community and those around us. It also includes relationship ,communication skill and support system. It also builds a healthy supportive system.

  This may include healthy relationships, communication skills and adjustment to change.

    Strategies to enhance your social wellness

       1 - Balance your social and personal life.

        2- Always ready to interact with new people.

       3 -Share your new experience and skills with people.

       4- Observe others and ask questions to gain a better understanding.

       5- volunteer on campus or in the community.

Financial Wellness

Financial wellness is how our finances contribute to our overall wellness. It is the healthy relationship between your goals and your financial obligations.

 This may include building a budget, meal planning, and healthy living on a budget.

   Strategies to enhance your financial wellness

     1 - Practice self-care that does not cost a lot of money.

     2 -Save money by cooking your own meals, less eating out.

    3 -Use cash instead of debit or credit to avoid spending more.

    4 - Make use of scholarships and grant applications.

    5 -Create a weekly budget for things like food, entertainment, and money to put away.

Spiritual Wellness

  Spiritual wellness involves our set of beliefs, principles, and values that help give direction to our lives. It is seeking meaning and purpose in our everyday lives, which ultimately encourages wellness.

  This may include compassion, morals, values, spirituality, meditation, beliefs, gratitude, self-understanding, and being at peace with nature

   Strategies to enhance your spiritual wellness

       1- Explore faith services in the local community.

        2 - Choose hobbies or activities that allow you to explore meaning and purpose.

        3 - Take time for quiet reflection or prayer.

        4 - Connect with nature – go for a walk in nature and practice mindfulness.

        5-Grow your relationships with others by spending quality time with loved ones.

Environmental Wellness

 Environmental wellness is how your environment positively affects your wellness. It includes incorporating nature in your life to feel a sense of peace and wellness.

 This may include sustainable wellness, nature/forest therapy, and the impact of your surroundings on your wellness.

Strategies to enhance your Environmental wellness

     1 - Engage in healthy physical activity in nature when you can by walking in parks, going for hikes, studying outside, etc.

     2 -Maintain a clean and organized living space.

     3 -Protect yourself from environmental hazards such as loud noise, pollution and second hand smoke.

     4 - Walk or run in a park or on nature trails instead of on a treadmill.

     5 - spend more time with nature .

Why is wellness important??

  •  Improved Physical health : Importance of wellness promotes a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise , consuming balanced nutrition and sufficient sleep . These practices help prevent chronic illnesses such as heart disease ,diabetes ,etc.
  • Enhanced mental health : Good mental health is crucial for our wellness .When we are mentally healthy we can manage all situations in a better way.
  • Better Relationship : Importance of wellness helps us to maintain a healthy relationship with those around us. We are better equipped to communicate effectively, express empathy and form meaningful connections.
  • Increase Productivity : A healthy mind and body are essential for productivity. When we feel good ,we are more focused and effective at work.
  • Improved overall quality of life : Wellness contributes to an overall sense of happiness, fulfilment and satisfaction in life. When we feel good physically ,mentally and emotionally ,we can enjoy our life.

Conclusion

      In conclusion ,wellness is an essential aspect of achieving health and happiness .It is a continuous process that requires commitment, efforts, and self awareness. By making small changes to our daily habits ,we can improve our overall wellness and lead a more fulfilling life.
